Bottom line up front: the baby stocking stuffers worth the space are small, safe and genuinely used after Christmas morning: a teether, a chewable book, first-foods gear matched to the baby’s age, a bath toy, and one practical item like a nasal aspirator. Anything with small parts or a button battery stays out of a baby’s stocking, however small and cute it is. And keep it to a handful of things. A baby under one will spend Christmas morning on the wrapping paper, so the stocking is really for the weeks after.
Below are eleven picks, sorted by what they are for. Prices are only shown where I loaded them from the brand’s own site, on 23 September 2026. I bought or was given everything here for my own two kids, and affiliate links never change my verdicts.

Things to chew
Manhattan Toy Winkel, $18.00. A tangle of soft tubes around a small rattle cube. It is the easiest thing in this list for a young baby to grab, because wherever a clumsy hand lands it catches a loop. It is sold as a rattle and a sensory teether, and it fits in a stocking without squashing.
Baby Banana teether-toothbrush. A silicone banana with soft bristles at the tip, sold on the listing as a teether and training toothbrush from infant to toddler. It is the stocking stuffer with a job after Christmas: gnawing at teething time, and then the first thing that goes near new teeth. The peel-shaped handles are wide enough for a baby to hold, and they are a big part of why it gets used.
Oball. The lattice ball I already recommended in my 6-month toy list. It is graspable by a raking hand months before a smooth ball is, light, and it rolls just enough to encourage the first attempts at scooting. It is the cheapest-feeling thing on this list and one of the most used.
Things to look at and read
Indestructibles: Baby Babble. A first-words book printed on a chew-proof, rip-proof, washable material rather than paper. For a baby, a book is something to chew and look at more than something read from cover to cover, and this series is built for that. It is also flat and light, which is ideal for a stocking.
Wee Gallery Art Cards, $25.95. Six two-sided, high-contrast black-and-white animal cards, 5x7 inches. At $25.95 on weegallery.com they are the pricier item in the stocking, but they are the one that suits the youngest baby. A two-month-old at their first Christmas gets more from a black-and-white card than from any toy. If you are shopping for a newborn, this is the one to pick.
Mealtime, from six months
If the baby is starting solids around the holidays, feeding gear is the most useful category in the stocking. Parents starting food often want to know the order and pace for introducing the common allergens, and Betteroo has a step-by-step guide to that part.
NumNum Pre-Spoon GOOtensils. A flat, textured silicone “pre-spoon” that grips purée on its surface rather than holding it in a bowl, so a six-month-old can get food to their own mouth without keeping a spoon level. The listing is for a two-pack, labelled for 6 months and up. It is the stocking stuffer most likely to be used on 26 December.
Bumkins SuperBib. A waterproof, machine-washable bib with a catch pocket, sized for 6 to 24 months according to the listing. Bibs are consumables at this stage, so an extra one never goes unused. It folds flat.
Munchkin Snack Catcher, $3.69 each. A cup with soft flaps on the lid, so a toddler can reach in for a snack but tipping it over does not empty it. Munchkin’s page lists it for 12 months and up, holding up to 9 ounces, at $3.69 for one cup; the Amazon link is a two-pack. It suits a stocking for a first Christmas after the first birthday.
Bath and practical
Stacking cups. A set of eight nesting cups with holes in the bottom, so water pours through them at bath time. They get stacked, knocked over, filled and emptied for the next two years. Cups like these are a better bath gift than squeeze-and-squirt animals. A squirt toy traps water inside where you cannot see or dry it, while an open cup drains and dries out.
NoseFrida nasal aspirator, $14.99. Not glamorous, and exactly why it belongs in a stocking. Christmas falls in cold season, and this is the thing parents wish they already had on the first night of a blocked nose. It was $14.99 on frida.com.
For a first Christmas after the first birthday
Crayola My First palm-grasp crayons. Egg-shaped, washable crayons labelled for 12 months and up. They suit a fist grip, and making a mark is its own discovery at this age. Supervise, as with anything that fits in a hand. If the child is well past the first birthday, my toddler stocking stuffers list picks up where this one stops, with picks for one- to three-year-olds. For the bigger gift beside the stocking, my gifts for 1 year olds list covers the push toys and books that got the most use.
What stays out of a baby’s stocking
Anything with small parts. A stocking is by definition a bag of small things, which makes this the main risk. The age label on a toy is often a small-parts warning, not a skill rating. Federal rules treat any toy intended for children under 3 that presents “a choking, aspiration, or ingestion hazard because of small parts” as a banned hazardous substance (16 CFR 1501, via govinfo.gov). If it is labelled 3+, it does not go in a baby’s stocking, however small it is.
Button batteries, including the ones inside things. Light-up toys, musical cards, novelty ornaments and remote controls all use them, and so do many stocking-sized gadgets. Poison Control states plainly that “swallowed batteries burn through a child’s esophagus in just 2 hours” (Poison Control, loaded 23 September 2026). The same page gives the National Battery Ingestion Hotline, 1-800-498-8666, and the poison center line, 1-800-222-1222. If a battery-powered item goes in at all, the battery compartment must be screwed shut, and loose spare batteries should never be in the stocking.
Food. Candy and small snacks are the traditional stocking filler and are wrong for a baby. They are also a choking risk if an older sibling’s stocking gets shared around.
Anything for the crib. Soft toys, blankets and pillows stay out of the sleep space for the first year, so a plush stuffed into a baby’s stocking belongs on a shelf, not in the crib.
If you want one bigger gift instead
A stocking of small things is fun, but one well-chosen gift often gets more use than five small ones. My baby gift ideas list is sorted by the baby’s age when the box is opened, and covers muslins, wearable blankets and a play gym.
FAQ
What do you put in a baby’s stocking?
A teether or rattle, a chew-proof book, age-matched feeding gear (from about six months), a bath toy that drains, and one practical item like a nasal aspirator. Three to five things is plenty for a baby under one.
What are good stocking stuffers for a 6 month old?
A pre-spoon, a waterproof bib, an Oball or Winkel to grab, a teether-toothbrush and an Indestructibles book. Six months is when first foods usually start, which is why the feeding gear is most useful right then.
Are stocking stuffers for babies a waste of money?
They can be if you fill the stocking with novelty items. Picked for use, they are one of the better-value gifts, because most of the items above cost less than a single toy and get used daily.
What should you not put in a baby’s stocking?
Anything labelled 3+, anything with a button battery that is not behind a screwed-shut compartment, food, and soft toys meant for the crib.
