Baby Gift Ideas Parents Actually Keep (and What Gets Returned)

Bottom line up front: the baby gift ideas that get kept are matched to the baby’s age on the day the box is opened, not the age on the invitation. For a newborn, that means muslin swaddles, a wearable blanket in the size that fits now, and practical kit nobody thinks to register for. For a three-to-six-month-old, it means high-contrast cards, a rattle they can actually grip, and a play gym. From six months it means feeding gear. What gets returned is newborn clothing that is already too small, anything meant for the crib other than a fitted sheet, and duplicates of things the parents deliberately chose.

This is a list of gifts for the baby. If you want ideas aimed at the parents instead, Betteroo keeps a separate list of practical ones. I bought most of what follows for my own two kids, received the rest as gifts, and affiliate links never change my verdicts. Every price below is one I loaded from the brand’s own site on 23 September 2026.

Newborn gifts that get used daily

Muslin swaddles: aden + anais Essentials 4-pack

A four-pack of large cotton muslins is the gift I would give any newborn without asking first. The aden + anais Essentials muslin swaddles were $39.95 for four on the brand’s site. In our house they were a swaddle, a burp cloth, a clean surface on a borrowed changing table, a light layer over a lap while feeding and a tummy-time mat, often on the same day. They soften with washing rather than wearing out. The one limit worth passing on with the gift: swaddling stops at the first signs of rolling, so the muslins outlast their use as a swaddle by a long way. That is fine, because swaddling was never their main job.

A wearable blanket, in the size that fits now

Loose blankets stay out of the crib for the first year, and a wearable blanket is how families keep a baby warm instead. The HALO SleepSack cotton wearable blanket is the classic, and the cotton version was $34.99 on halosleep.com. The mistake to avoid as a gift giver is buying two sizes up so the baby can “grow into it”. A sleep sack that is too big at the neck and armholes is unsafe until the baby fits it, and parents cannot use it in the meantime. Ask the parents for the baby’s current weight, or buy the size for the next two to three months, and check the brand’s size chart rather than the age on the label. My sleep sack roundup compares fabrics and TOG ratings if you want to go beyond the classic.

The gift nobody registers for: NoseFrida

The NoseFrida nasal aspirator was $14.99 on frida.com. It sounds like a joke gift, and in practice it was the one I would least want to be without on the first night of a first cold. A tube with a filter, a mouthpiece and suction you control: it is cheap, it lasts, and nobody thinks to buy it until they need it at 2 a.m. Put it in with something prettier if you want the unwrapping to go down well.

Newborns pick out bold, high-contrast shapes more easily than soft colours, which is why black-and-white cards got more attention in the first weeks than any colourful toy. The Wee Gallery Art Cards, Original Animals are six two-sided 5x7-inch cards (elephant, fish, giraffe, snail, owl and cat, per the maker’s page) and were listed at $25.95 on weegallery.com. Prop one up at tummy time or beside the changing table. The maker says they wipe clean with a damp cloth, and they are one of the few newborn gifts that fit into an envelope.

Three to six months: grabbing and mouthing

This is the age of grabbing, mouthing and staring at your own hands. If you want to calibrate a gift to where a particular baby is, Betteroo has a month-by-month look at what babies are doing through the first year.

The first grab: Manhattan Toy Winkel

The Manhattan Toy Winkel is a loop of soft plastic tubes with a small rattle cube in the middle, listed at $18.00 on manhattantoy.com. The loops mean a baby with a clumsy raking grip catches something wherever their hand lands, which is exactly what you want in a first rattle. The tubes double as a teether. It is light enough that dropping it on their own face is not a disaster.

The teether everyone recognises: Sophie la girafe

Sophie la girafe is natural rubber with long legs that are easy to grip and chew. Parents mostly already know it, which is the point. It is a safe, recognisable gift that rarely goes back. The honest caveat: it is hollow, with a squeaker, so read the maker’s cleaning instructions before you wash it. Water that gets inside a hollow toy is hard to dry out.

The floor months: Lovevery Play Gym

The Lovevery Play Gym was $150 on lovevery.com. It is the biggest single gift on this page. In my full review it was the best-designed gym I have used and the only one my kids came back to after month four, at three to four times the price of a good conventional gym. That premium is easier to justify as a group gift than as a parent’s own purchase. It is a gift to coordinate with the parents first: a family ends up with one play gym, and a second is the textbook returned gift. Lovevery’s subscription kits were $80 each for the first-year stages when I checked, which makes a single kit the smaller version of the same idea.

Books that survive a baby: Indestructibles

Indestructibles: Baby Animals is printed on a tough, washable, chew-proof material rather than paper, so it can be mouthed, drooled on and washed. At this age a book is something to chew and look at, not something to read aloud from start to finish, and these are built for exactly that.

Six to twelve months: first foods

First foods: ezpz Mini Mat

The ezpz Mini Mat is a single piece of silicone that is both placemat and three-section plate, and it suctions to a highchair tray. It was $22.49 on ezpzfun.com. It does not stop mess, but it does stop the whole plate going over the side in one move, which was the specific problem in our house. It is dishwasher-safe. Check that it fits the family’s highchair tray; most trays have room for it.

A bib that catches: Bumkins SuperBib

The Bumkins SuperBib is a waterproof, machine-washable bib with a catch pocket, sized for 6 to 24 months according to the listing. Food-stage bibs get used several times a day and wear out, so extras are never unwelcome. That makes them a reliable small add-on to a bigger gift.

What gets returned, regifted or quietly stored

Newborn-size clothing. Many babies are out of newborn sizes within weeks, and some never fit them at all. If you want to buy clothes, buy a size or two up and in the right season for when the baby will be that size.

Anything for the crib except a fitted sheet. Crib bedding sets with bumpers and quilts are sold everywhere, and they are exactly what safe-sleep guidance rules out. The NIH Safe to Sleep campaign states that “research links crib bumpers and bedding other than a fitted sheet covering the baby’s mattress to serious injuries and deaths” (Safe to Sleep, loaded 23 September 2026). The same goes for weighted swaddles and sacks, which that page also lists. A well-informed parent will not use these, so they are wasted money at best.

Loungers and nests as a sleep space. The AAP’s HealthyChildren site tells parents not to use “products for sleep that aren’t specifically marketed for infant sleep,” naming Boppy pillows and Dock-a-Tots (HealthyChildren safe-sleep guide). They are popular shower gifts all the same.

Duplicates of chosen gear. Bottles, pacifiers, carriers and monitors are bought to preferences you cannot see from outside. One family’s must-have bottle is another’s reject. If it is on the registry, buy it from the registry. If it is not, pick something else. My minimalist registry checklist is built on this, and my list of baby products you do not need covers the gear that tends to end up in the donation box.

Shoes before walking. Beautiful, never worn, outgrown in a season.

FAQ

What is a good baby gift that parents actually use?

Muslin swaddles, a wearable blanket in the right size, a nasal aspirator, and an age-matched toy or book. Practical gifts get used daily. Decorative ones mostly get photographed.

Should I buy a baby gift off the registry?

If there is a registry, buy from it for anything to do with sleep, feeding or travel. Those are preferences and safety choices the parents have already made. Go off-registry for books, cards, toys and muslins, where a duplicate is harmless, and include a gift receipt.

What should you not give as a baby gift?

Crib bumpers, quilts and pillows, weighted sleep products, loungers or nests meant for sleep, and newborn-size clothes. The first four conflict with safe-sleep guidance, and the last is often outgrown before it is worn.

How much should I spend on a baby gift?

There is no standard. Most of the most-used gifts on this list cost under $40. A card with a board book is a perfectly good gift from a colleague, and the $80-150 items are best coordinated with the parents so they do not end up with two.

Are clothes a good baby gift?

Yes, if you size up. Buy for the season in which the baby will actually fit them, not for today. Soft, easy-open clothes get worn far more than outfits with buttons down the back.
