Bottom line up front: the toddler stocking stuffers that get used are things a one- to three-year-old can squash, line up, pour or read, plus one practical item: a tub of modelling dough, a small set of figures, a lift-the-flap board book, a suction bath toy and a toddler toothbrush. Check the age label on every item, because a stocking is by definition a bag of small things, and many small toys are rated 3+ for choking reasons. Five or six items is plenty. A toddler will empty the stocking in two minutes and then play with the box.
This list covers roughly 12 months to three years. For a baby’s first Christmas, my baby stocking stuffers list is the better starting point. Prices are shown only where I could load them from the brand’s own site, on 7 October 2026. Ages come from the maker’s page or the listing, and I say which.

Things to squash and line up
Play-Doh multi-pack. The listing labels this Play-Doh set for ages 2+. Dough is the stocking stuffer with the longest life on this page: squashed, rolled, cut with a blunt spoon and mashed together into one brown lump by January. That is the whole point. It suits a two-year-old who no longer puts everything in their mouth. For a child who still does, wait a few months, since it is a toy and not a food. Store it in the tubs with the lids pressed down, or it dries out.
Fisher-Price Little People figures. Chunky figures sized for small hands, which this set’s listing rates for 18 months to 5 years. Little People get lined up, put to bed, driven around in anything with a seat and carried everywhere. They are the toddler version of a stocking full of small toys, in a size the listing rates for this age. Pick whichever characters the child already loves. If they have a Little People vehicle or play set, more figures make it more playable.
A book with something to do
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (lift-the-tab edition). Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle’s book in a lift-the-tab format. The repeating question-and-answer rhythm is what one- and two-year-olds love, and it is one of the first books many toddlers can “read” back to you. The tabs give a child something to do on every page. Flaps do tear eventually. That is the book being loved, not a defect.
Bath time
Boon Jellies suction bath toys. Soft jellyfish shapes that stick to the tub wall and to each other with suction cups. The listing rates them for 12 months and up. They give a toddler a building game in the bath, sticking, pulling off and restacking, which a floating toy does not. Like any bath toy, rinse them and let them dry out between baths.
For a slightly older toddler who has outgrown the stacking cups in the baby list, these are the natural next step.
For a near-three: mess-free drawing
Melissa & Doug Water Wow! pad. A reusable pad with a chunky refillable water pen: colours appear where the pen goes and fade as the page dries, so it can be done again. Melissa & Doug lists its Water Wow! Animals pad for 3+ years at $8.99. The Amazon link is the Safari pad from the same range. It goes in the stocking of a child turning three, not an 18-month-old, and it is the best toddler stocking stuffer for a long car journey or a restaurant. Expect the pen to be the part that goes missing.
Practical, and secretly the most useful
RADIUS Tiny Totz toothbrush. A soft toddler toothbrush, sold as a three-pack, labelled on the listing for ages 1 and up. A new toothbrush is a stocking tradition for a reason. A toddler who got to “choose” their own brush is more willing to let you use it. Three in a pack means one for home, one for a grandparent’s house and a spare.
OXO Tot fork and spoon set. Short, chunky toddler cutlery. Feeding themselves is a big project between one and three, and child-sized cutlery helps with it. This is the most likely item on this page to be used every single day of January.
If the family already has an audio player
If the toddler already has a Toniebox or a Yoto, content is the perfect stocking stuffer. A Creative-Tonie was $9.99 on tonies.com and records up to 90 minutes, so a grandparent can record bedtime stories. Yoto cards were $12.99-$14.99 on yotoplay.com. Tonies rates its boxes from age 1, Yoto rates its players 3+. If the family has neither, do not try to fit a player in a stocking. My Yoto vs Toniebox comparison explains which suits which child.
What stays out of a toddler’s stocking
Anything labelled 3+ for a child under three. The age label on a small toy is often a small-parts warning, not a statement of difficulty. Federal rules treat a toy intended for under-3s that presents “a choking, aspiration, or ingestion hazard because of small parts” as a banned hazardous substance (16 CFR 1501, via govinfo.gov). Party favours, capsule toys, small vehicles and mini figures sold for older children are the usual culprits. They are also the usual contents of an older sibling’s stocking, so keep the two stockings apart on Christmas morning.
Button batteries, including inside gadgets. Light-up toys, musical cards, novelty torches and remote controls often run on them. Poison Control states that “swallowed batteries burn through a child’s esophagus in just 2 hours,” and advises keeping battery compartments secured and loose batteries away from children (Poison Control, loaded 7 October 2026). Its National Battery Ingestion Hotline is 1-800-498-8666. If anything battery-powered goes in at all, the compartment must be screwed shut, and spare batteries stay out of the stocking.
Hard sweets, nuts and popcorn. They are the traditional stocking filler, and they are choking hazards for toddlers. Leave food out of a toddler’s stocking.
Small magnets. Magnetic toys sold for older children can contain small loose magnets. Keep them out of a toddler’s stocking.
Keep it to five
A toddler with a stocking of fifteen small things will spend Christmas morning opening, not playing. Five well-chosen items get more use, cost less and leave room for the bigger gift. For that bigger gift, see gifts for 1 and 2 year olds or the best gifts for 3 year olds.
Many of the best toddler activities in December need nothing from a shop at all. Betteroo’s list of play ideas sorted by toddler age is a good antidote to over-buying.
FAQ
What do you put in a toddler’s stocking?
Modelling dough (for twos and up), a few chunky figures, a lift-the-flap book, a bath toy, a toddler toothbrush and child-sized cutlery. If the family has an audio player, a Creative-Tonie or Yoto card. Five or six items is enough.
What are good stocking stuffers for a 1 year old?
Chunky figures, a sturdy board book with flaps, suction bath toys rated 12 months and up, and a first toothbrush. Keep anything labelled 3+ for later, and do not include dough until the child has stopped mouthing everything.
What are good stocking stuffers for a 2 year old?
Play-Doh (rated 2+), Little People figures, a lift-the-tab book, bath toys, toddler cutlery and a toothbrush. For a child close to three, a Water Wow! pad is a good mess-free addition.
What should you not put in a toddler’s stocking?
Anything labelled 3+ for a child under three, anything with a button battery that is not behind a screwed-shut compartment, loose batteries, small magnets, and hard sweets, nuts or popcorn.
How much should you spend on toddler stocking stuffers?
There is no right amount. Most of the items on this list are inexpensive, and a stocking works best as a handful of useful small things next to one main gift. The bigger gifts on the age-specific gift lists are where the budget usually goes.
