Bottom line up front: most nurseries are warmer than their parents think, because the number people trust — the thermostat down the hall, or the readout on a monitor sitting on a dresser — is measured somewhere the baby is not. The commonly recommended range is roughly 68 to 72°F, guidance sits on avoiding overheating rather than hitting a precise digit, and the only way to know where you actually are is a cheap sensor at crib height. Why every number you’re already looking at is wrong

Temperature stratifies. Warm air rises, floors run cold, and the space directly above a crib mattress in the corner of a room is not the space your thermostat is sampling. Three specific errors, all common:

  • The hallway thermostat. Different room, often a different floor, usually next to a return vent. It is measuring the house, not the nursery.

None of those are broken products. They’re just measuring somewhere else.

The tool: a $12 hygrometer at crib height

It costs somewhere around $12, reads temperature to about ±1°F and humidity to about ±2 to 3 percent, refreshes every ten seconds, and runs 18 to 24 months on a single AAA. What makes it the right tool rather than just a cheap one is the placement freedom. Put it on the wall beside the crib at roughly mattress height, or on a shelf level with the mattress, and you get the number that matters. Not on the mattress, not in the crib, not clipped to a rail — nothing loose goes in a crib, ever, and a small hard-plastic device is exactly the kind of thing that shouldn’t be there.

Where it falls short: the display is small and unlit, so a 3 a.m. reading means walking over with a phone torch. If you want a number you can read from the doorway, there are backlit versions in the same price class. And it reads where it sits — it will not tell you about the draught on the other side of the room.

The humidity readout turns out to matter as much as the temperature. Dry winter air from forced-air heating is behind a lot of stuffy-nose wakings that get blamed on teething. What to do with the number

Treat those as starting points rather than rules — babies run warm or cool individually, and a 1.0 TOG on a hot sleeper in a 68-degree room is a fine reason to size down. The check that beats every chart: a hand on the back of the neck or the chest. Warm and dry is right. Sweaty, or a damp hairline, means overdressed — and overdressing is the error that actually matters, since guidance on avoiding overheating is far more emphatic than any guidance on a specific thermostat number. Cold hands and feet are normal and are not a reason to add a layer.

What I’d skip

Wearable temperature-sensing socks and smart mats. Expensive, and solving a measurement problem a $12 sensor already solves.

Space heaters in a nursery. Hot spots, fire risk, and a dry-air problem you then have to solve with another appliance. Fix the room’s baseline instead — a door left ajar, a closed vent opened, a blackout curtain that also insulates.

Anything that goes in the crib. Crib fans, positioners, padded liners. Temperature is managed by the room and the clothing, never by adding objects to the sleep surface.

When temperature is not the problem

Be honest about the size of this variable. A nursery five degrees too warm is a real and easily fixed drag on sleep. It is not why a four-month-old is waking every ninety minutes, and it is not a schedule problem in disguise.
