Best Gifts for 5 Year Olds: Picks for Boys and Girls

Bottom line up front: the best gifts for 5 year olds, and the best gifts for 5 year old boys and girls alike, are things with rules and projects: a big LEGO brick box, a cooperative detective game, a stacking card game, a first set of phonics readers and a scooter sized for ages 5-12. Five-year-olds can follow a plan, finish a game and start sounding out words, so the gifts that last are the ones that use those new skills. Every price below was loaded from the maker’s own site on 19 October 2026. Where a maker’s site would not load or shows no price, the pick has none rather than a guess.

How I chose: each pick carries an age label of 5+ (or a range that includes five) on the maker’s page or listing, does something a 3- or 4-year-old gift does not, and has a clear reason to still be in use at six. Affiliate links never change a verdict on this site. If you are shopping for a younger sibling too, my gifts for 3 year olds (and 4s) list covers magnetic tiles, pretend play and a first scooter, and nothing from it is repeated here.

What a 5-year-old is working on

Five is a bridge year. Many children start kindergarten, and the play changes with it. They can hold a set of rules in their head and notice when someone breaks them. They build things with a plan and come back to them the next day. Many know their letters and are starting to read simple words. And they are bigger and faster, so the ride-on that suited them at three often stops fitting.

That gives a short spec sheet for a gift for a 5 year old: something to build that rewards a plan, a game with a real decision in it, something that turns letters into reading, and something to move on outside.

Two notes on that table. LEGO’s US site returned a 403 to me, so the brick box has no brand-site price. Gamewright lists Outfoxed! with no price, only “buy online” and “buy local” links.

Best gifts for 5 year olds

Building with a plan: LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box 10698

The LEGO Classic Large Creative Brick Box 10698 is 790 pieces in a storage tub, listed for ages 4-99 by retailers. At five, it is the right kind of LEGO: loose bricks in lots of colours rather than a single model with a manual. A five-year-old can build a house, take it apart, and build a better one on Saturday. That multi-day project is exactly the skill this age is growing into.

Why a brick box rather than a licensed set: a themed set gets built once from instructions and then sits on a shelf. A box of basic bricks has no wrong answer. If the child already loves a particular theme, add one small themed set as a second gift and let the bricks mix.

The drawback is the same as every LEGO gift. 790 small pieces will end up on the floor, and most of them are small enough to be a choking hazard for a baby or toddler. If a younger sibling is crawling, decide where building happens before the box is opened.

A first strategy game: Outfoxed!

Outfoxed! from Gamewright is a cooperative whodunit for ages 5+, 2-4 players, about 20 minutes a game. Gamewright’s description: players “move around the board to gather clues and then use the special evidence scanner to rule out suspects,” racing to name the guilty fox before it reaches the exit. The box holds 16 suspect cards, a clue decoder, a fox figurine, three dice and a board.

Why it suits five: it is the step after the purely cooperative games that work at four. There is a real decision on every turn, whether to look for a clue or reveal a suspect, and real deduction in ruling suspects out. Because everyone wins or loses together against the fox, a five-year-old learns to plan and reason without a sibling gloating at the end. Gamewright says it reinforces “cooperation, deductive reasoning, visual discrimination,” and that is a fair description of what you will see at the table.

A quick family game: HABA Rhino Hero

HABA Rhino Hero is $14.99 on habausa.com, for 2-5 players aged 5 and up, and takes 5-15 minutes. Players build a card skyscraper out of wall and roof cards, then move a wooden rhino up it; HABA’s line is that “one wrong move can send the entire tower tumbling.” It is a dexterity game with a little card play on top.

Why it is on the list: it is short enough to play three times before bed, it fits in a coat pocket, and a five-year-old with steady hands can beat an adult fairly. That last point matters more than it sounds. If you want more card games that work at this age, Betteroo keeps a list of easy card games sorted by age, many of which need only a standard deck.

Starting to read: Bob Books Set 1

Bob Books Set 1: Beginning Readers was $15.99 on bobbooks.com on 19 October, on sale from $17.99. It is a box of 12 small books, 12 pages each, and the publisher’s pitch is a simple one: “Using only the letters M, A, T and S, children can read their first book.” Each book adds a few new letters, uses words of two and three letters that can all be sounded out, and runs 7 to 20 words.

The condition is in Bob Books’ own copy: “If your child knows the alphabet.” For a five-year-old who does, this is a gift that ends with them reading a whole book to you, which few toys can claim. For one who does not know their letters yet, it is too early; buy a picture book they will love being read instead, and come back to this at six.

Outside: Micro Maxi LED scooter

If a five-year-old has outgrown a toddler scooter, the Micro Maxi LED is the next size up. It is $159.99 on microkickboard.com and listed for ages 5-12. Like the smaller Micro scooters it is three-wheeled and lean-to-steer, the handlebar adjusts “to grow with the rider,” and the wheels light up when they turn with “no batteries needed.” That last detail matters at this age: there is no button battery anywhere on it.

The Micro Mini on my 3-year-old list is rated to age five, so a child who already has one will be at the top of its range this year. The Maxi is built for the next seven years. Buy a helmet with it, and if the child has never ridden a three-wheel scooter, a cheaper one will tell you whether they like it before you spend this much.

Stories at bedtime: a screen-free audio player

At five, a child can run an audio player alone: choosing a story, skipping a chapter, turning it down. For most five-year-olds who do not have one yet, my Yoto vs Toniebox comparison points to a Yoto, mainly because its cards cost less per story and its Player adds a clock and ok-to-wake light. If a younger sibling already has a Toniebox and the figures are in the house, my Toniebox review covers whether a second box or the Toniebox 2’s games make sense at this age.

Gifts for 5 year old boys

Every pick on this page works for any five-year-old, and I would not change the list for a boy. What I would do is start from what he already plays. A five-year-old who builds vehicles and towers will get the most from the LEGO brick box. One who wants to run everywhere is the Micro Maxi child. One who argues about rules is ready for Outfoxed!, and one who is always first to the bookshelf is ready for Bob Books. If you are buying for a boy you do not know well, Rhino Hero is the safest small gift: it costs $14.99 and the whole family plays it.

Gifts for 5 year old girls

The same rule applies. A girl who builds will use the brick box as much as anyone; buy the large box, not a smaller themed set someone has decided suits girls. A girl who loves stories is the strongest case for an audio player or for Bob Books if she knows her letters. For a girl who loves games, Outfoxed! is the one I would pick, because a cooperative game with real deduction holds a five-year-old’s attention for months. And a girl who is always outside will get years out of the Micro Maxi, which is rated to age 12.

What did not make the list

Anything with a coin or button battery that is easy to open. Light-up and talking toys are common at this age. Check that any battery compartment closes with a screw, and keep spare batteries out of reach, because younger siblings are usually around.

Sets labelled 8+ “to grow into”. Above three, an age label is mostly about skill. A five-year-old given an 8+ model kit usually ends up watching an adult build it.

Sport-specific gear bought as a surprise. If the child is already in a team sport, the parents know what they need and in what size. Ask first.

FAQ

What are the best gifts for a 5 year old?

Gifts that use what five-year-olds are learning: a big LEGO brick box for building with a plan, a first strategy game such as Outfoxed!, a quick family game such as Rhino Hero, Bob Books Set 1 if they know their letters, and a scooter sized for ages 5-12.

What are good gifts for 5 year old boys?

The same gifts as for any five-year-old, chosen by interest: the LEGO brick box for builders, the Micro Maxi scooter for a child who wants to be outside, Outfoxed! for one who likes rules, and Bob Books for one who is starting to read.

What are good gifts for 5 year old girls?

The same list, chosen by what she already plays: building, games, reading or riding. Skip the idea that a girl needs a smaller or themed version of a building set; buy the one a builder would want.

How much should you spend on a gift for a 5 year old?

There is no right amount. Rhino Hero and Bob Books cost under $20 and get as much use as the scooter. As a guest, a game or a book is plenty. Save the bigger gifts for close family, and agree them with the parents.

Is LEGO OK for a 5 year old?

Yes. LEGO Classic brick boxes are listed for ages 4-99. The practical issue is younger siblings: the pieces are small enough to be a choking hazard for babies and toddlers, so pick a building spot they cannot reach.
