Bottom line up front: yes, the Toniebox 2 is worth it for a child of roughly one to six who will play with it as a toy, and it is the only screen-free audio player I would hand to a one-year-old. A child sets a small figure on top and the box plays its songs or stories, and tonies says kids “tap, tilt or squeeze to navigate” from there. It costs $129.99 on its own at tonies.com, or $149.99 as a starter set with one figure. The catch is the figures. At $19.99 for most character Tonies, the library costs more than the box within a year, so budget for it before you buy.
This is a single-box review. If you are deciding between the Toniebox and a Yoto, my Yoto vs Toniebox comparison has the side-by-side and the card-versus-figure cost table. Everything below was read on tonies.com and in the product listings on 19 October 2026; prices move during the holiday sales, so treat them as that day’s figures. What the Toniebox 2 does well
A one-year-old can run it. tonies says the Toniebox 2 and Lite are “designed and tested to be safe and easy to use for kids aged 1 through 12 and beyond.” There is no screen, no menu and nothing to slot in at the right angle. A figure goes on top and the audio starts; it comes off and the audio stops. That physical simplicity is the whole case for this box, and it is why it has no real competitor under age three.
It is built for being dropped. The Toniebox 2 is wrapped in a fabric tonies describes as “a mix of PVC and cotton,” with silicone ears, a polycarbonate platform and an ABS plastic frame underneath. That soft outer layer matters for a toy that gets carried around by its ears.
The figures are toys in their own right. A Tonie is a small painted character that a toddler lines up, carries around and argues about. That is part of what you are paying for, and it is the reason a Toniebox gets played with instead of sitting on a shelf.
Bedtime features that earn their place. The Toniebox 2 adds a sleep timer where “volume and glow gently fade before turning off,” a light ring that doubles as a night light, and a “Sunrise Alarm” that “eases your little listener into the day with a gentle sunrise glow and wake-up tunes.” All of it is set up in the tonies app, as is the maximum volume. For a child who falls asleep to an audiobook, a fade-out beats a story that cuts off mid-sentence. If the sleep timer is going into a wider routine, Betteroo’s guide to building a toddler’s wind-down, step by step covers where a story fits.
Your own voice, cheaply. A Creative-Tonie lets you record and upload up to 90 minutes of your own stories and songs. On tonies.com most were $9.99 on 19 October, and a few designs were $6.99. For grandparents who live far away, it is the best-value thing tonies sells.
What it does less well
The figures are where the money goes. On 19 October, almost every standard character Tonie on tonies.com was $19.99, with a handful at $11.99. A starter set comes with one. Four more figures add about $80, so a realistic first Christmas is closer to $230 than to the $149.99 on the box. tonies’ subscription sends two or three figures every one, two or three months with what it calls a “10-20% discount” and free ground shipping, which helps if you were going to buy figures anyway.
You need a phone to set it up. Setup runs through the tonies app, which needs Android 7.0 or higher or iOS 15.6 and above, and uses Bluetooth to pair during setup. Volume limits, the alarm and the sleep light are all app settings. That is fine for most families, but it means the “no screens” promise applies to the child, not the parent.
Battery life is not on the spec sheet. tonies’ FAQ says a full charge needs “at least 3 hours” and that “10 minutes of charging gives your Toniebox 2 up to 45 minutes of playtime.” I could not find a total battery-life figure on the pages I read, so I am not printing one.
The cable is short on purpose. The Toniebox 2 ships with a 22 cm charging cable, which tonies says is “a mandatory requirement to meet child safety standards for little listeners aged 1+.” For children 3 and older, it says any suitable USB-C cable will do. Keep that in mind before you swap in a long cable in a toddler’s room.
Some features are limited for the youngest users. tonies says “for safety reasons, some of the Toniebox 2’s features are limited in 1+ mode,” and the app shows different settings for 1+ and 3+ modes. Expect the box to do a little less for a one-year-old than the marketing shows.
Is the Toniebox worth it for older kids?
tonies rates the box to 12 and beyond. My reading of the evidence is that the sweet spot is narrower. A toddler wants the figure-on-the-box ritual; a seven-year-old who reads chapter books mostly wants audiobooks and control over what plays. tonies’ answer for older children is Tonieplay, the screen-free game system that only runs on the Toniebox 2.
Tonieplay needs two things: a Toniebox 2 and a Tonieplay Controller. tonies says the first play of each game needs Wi-Fi, then it works offline, and that there are games “for everyone from 3 years and up.” On 19 October, the controller was $14.99 on tonies.com, single games were $14.99 or $24.99, and game-plus-controller bundles were $29.98 to $39.98. It does not work on the original Toniebox or on the Lite. If your child is six or older and has never had a Toniebox, I would not buy one for Tonieplay alone; look at the Yoto side of my comparison first.
Toniebox 2 vs Toniebox Lite
The Lite is the smaller, harder-shelled player. tonies says it “works with all Tonies, has a sleep timer, connects to Bluetooth headphones,” and that the Toniebox 2 “does everything the Toniebox Lite does” plus Tonieplay, the light ring and the squishy exterior. The Lite has a 4 Ah lithium iron phosphate battery, and no charging cable comes in the box.
Buy the Lite if you want a cheaper, backpack-sized story player for travel, or a second box for a sibling who will share the figures. Buy the Toniebox 2 if it will live in a bedroom, where the night light, sleep fade and sunrise alarm do real work, or if you want Tonieplay later. On Amazon the Lite starter set was still listed as a pre-order on 19 October, so tonies.com is the place to buy it for now.
Buying an original Toniebox secondhand
tonies.com still listed original Toniebox 1 starter sets at $99.99, but every one was marked unavailable on 19 October, so most first-generation boxes you see now are used. A used Toniebox 1 still plays Tonies, but Tonieplay “will only work on Toniebox 2.” Two checks for any used listing: ask the seller to remove the box from their tonies account first, and skip any tonies Blocks in the lot. tonies recalled its Blocks over a risk of magnet ingestion and says “it is illegal to sell a recalled product.” It also says “no Tonie figurines or Tonieboxes are impacted.”
Where to buy, and the return window
tonies’ 100-Day Happiness Guarantee covers a Toniebox Starter Set or bundle bought on tonies.com: if your family is not satisfied, “you can return it for a full refund within 100 days of purchase.” Purchases from other retailers are not eligible, and Tonies bought outside a bundle fall under the normal 30-day policy for unopened items. For a gift bought in October, that 100-day window is worth more than a few dollars off elsewhere.
On Amazon, the Toniebox 2 starter set comes in several colours with the Playtime Puppy figure. For a child old enough to listen on their own in the car, tonies sells Bluetooth headphones made for the Toniebox 2; keep the app’s volume limit set either way.
Who should buy a Toniebox 2
Buy it if:
- the child is between one and about five, or will be when the gift arrives;
- you want a bedroom player with a night light, sleep fade and wake-up glow;
- relatives want to send recorded stories (Creative-Tonie, 90 minutes);
- you can budget for figures over time, or use a subscription.
Skip it if:
- the child is seven or older and mostly wants audiobooks;
- you want the lowest cost per story (see the Yoto side of my comparison);
- what you really need is an all-night sleep-sound machine. For that, a dedicated machine does the job better, as I argue in my Hatch Rest review.
